Hong Kong teams up with experts to develop AI tailored for schools

Hong Kong’s government is partnering with technology experts, professionals and educators to develop a highly intelligent AI platform tailored to the needs of the city’s schools, Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin has said.

Choi told the Legislative Council on Wednesday that authorities were exploring launching a large language model (LLM) relating to the academic curriculum of Hong Kong’s schools.

She was responding to lawmaker Tang Fei, who asked whether the Education Bureau could take the lead in developing an LLM for schools to boost teaching and learning.

“We are now addressing the context of the curriculum and local schools by collaborating with educational technology companies, professional bodies, the tertiary education sector and EdCity [Hong Kong Education City] to explore the feasibility and method to launch a safe, reliable and suitable large language model that aligns with Hong Kong’s environment and curriculum,” Choi said.

But she did not give a timetable for the project.

An LLM is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) trained on vast amounts of text data, enabling it to understand and generate human-like responses for diverse tasks.
