US President Donald Trump plans to unveil a website on Thursday allowing people to directly buy prescription drugs, part of his push to address Americans’ concerns about affordability.
The president is scheduled to host a 7pm event to launch the site – branded as TrumpRx – at the White House alongside Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz and government design chief Joe Gebbia, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on social media.
The website is designed to enable customers to buy certain medicines directly from drug makers without using insurance and at discounted prices negotiated by the Trump administration.
Leavitt did not say when the site will become operational, or when some of the discounted drugs – which have been announced at a series of recent events at the White House – would actually become available.
The administration has touted its efforts to lower the cost of drugs, including by negotiating agreements with more than a dozen of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly & Co, Novo Nordisk A/S and Pfizer, often in exchange for a reduction in threatened tariffs.
It remains to be seen whether the website will significantly bring down costs and entice large numbers of Americans to pay cash for medicines instead of going through insurance.
