Former commerce chief Frederick Ma Si-hang has urged the public to deepen their support for disabled students in the city at a charity golf event organised by the Hong Kong Special Schools Council to raise awareness for this group.
The tournament, held on Friday at the Fanling Golf Club, drew 21 teams of 84 people, including one consisting of players with disabilities. Participants competed to win prizes such as a BYD electric car and tickets to see Cantopop singer Jacky Cheung Hok-yau in concert.
“The event is more than just money. We hope to raise public awareness for special schools … children with special needs are in need of much more care and support,” said Ma, who also chairs the special schools council and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
“The council did not have a very concrete goal this year. The ultimate goal for us is to call on more and more people to pay attention to children with special needs. The more, the merrier.”
The Hong Kong Special Schools Council is a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing special education and supporting students with special needs.
Ma did not disclose how much funds had been raised from the tournament, whose participants included leaders from several financial institutions such as HSBC, the city’s biggest lender, and FWD Group, where Ma serves as chairman.
