Explainer | Was the US capture of Venezuela’s President Maduro legal?

The US captured Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation early on Saturday morning, ‌culminating in a months-long pressure campaign by President Donald Trump’s administration that drew condemnation from some international leaders.

Maduro arrived Saturday evening at a military base in the United States and was transferred to New York City. The leftist leader was then flown by helicopter to Manhattan, where a large law enforcement contingent awaited.

The 63-year-old leader was to be taken first to the offices of the US Drug Enforcement Administration, then to the Metropolitan Detention Centre, a federal facility in Brooklyn, according to US media.

Below is a look at the legality of the US action.
