AI companies teaming up with some of the big retail stores is becoming a new trend. For those who still haven’t got why, the reason is pretty obvious: making users shop more smartly. However, the news of Google teaming up with Walmart isn’t just another partnership at all. Both companies are looking to revolutionize how people shop, and this time, it’s not just another AI experiment slapped onto an app.
Soon, Gemini will make Walmart shopping easier than ever
As part of the plans, Walmart and Sam’s Club shopping is now being directly integrated into Google’s Gemini experience. Yes, you heard that right. OpenAI did something similar when it announced a partnership with Target late last year. Google says it wants to make everyday shopping feel more natural, faster, and surprisingly personal.
Not to mention, Gemini AI, which was recently announced as Gmail’s all-in-one assistant, is at the center stage of this partnership too. The AI assistant will now pair with Walmart’s massive product ecosystem. The experience is being built by Walmart and will live directly inside Gemini using something called the Universal Commerce Protocol. In simple words, this means Gemini won’t just answer questions anymore. It will actively help users discover, compare, and buy products from Walmart and Sam’s Club when it actually makes sense.
As an example, Google mentions that if users ask Gemini for advice on spring camping gear, it can automatically pull relevant Walmart products. The interesting part is that it not only pulls items you can find online, but the recommendations also include in-store inventory. Since Gemini supports back-and-forth conversations, recommendations will feel more natural, rather than like a forced ad. That alone makes the experience feel less robotic and more useful for shoppers out there.

Gemini will make shopping experience more personalized
Google also appears to be taking care of personalization while you shop. That’s because when you link Walmart or Sam’s Club accounts, Gemini can suggest complementary items based on previous online and in-store purchases. It can even combine AI-recommended products with items already in your cart. Add Walmart+ and Sam’s Club membership benefits into the mix, and the shopping experience will feel more familiar.
The partnership also vouches for quick delivery. With customers getting access to hundreds of thousands of locally curated products, delivery is promised within three hours. However, in some locations, it can be as fast as 30 minutes, according to the announcement. That’s a serious advantage when AI-powered shopping meets real-world logistics.
Walmart, on the other hand, is seeing this partnership as more than just a feature update. John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart U.S. and incoming President and CEO of Walmart Inc., says:
The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail. We aren’t just watching the shift; we are driving it. We want to help customers get what they need and want, when and where they want it. Partnering with Google to bring the Walmart experience directly into Gemini is another step toward creating seamless shopping experiences for customers and members that are more intuitive and personal than ever before.

A new era of shopping is here
All that said, Google isn’t looking to replace shopping apps. It’s about integrating shopping directly into how people already search, ask questions, and plan their day. Speaking of unlocking the power of AI in shopping, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai says:
AI can improve every step of the consumer journey, from discovery to delivery. Walmart is an innovator in retail, and we are excited to partner with them on a new open standard to make agentic commerce a reality. Customers will soon be able to experience everything they love about Walmart directly in the Gemini app.
In the coming days, users will be able to access everything they look for from Walmart right inside the Gemini app, without jumping between platforms. If this works as promised, it could quietly reshape how everyday shopping happens.
