Key Highlights
- Anthropic has introduced Cowork, a new agentic AI mode in the Claude Desktop app that can complete long, multi-step tasks independently.
- Cowork allows users to generate documents, organise files, and integrate research without using the terminal.
- The research preview signals a shift in workplace AI, moving from prompt-based chatbots to outcome-driven AI coworkers.
Anthropic Brings Agentic AI to the Desktop
Anthropic is taking its AI assistant beyond traditional chat with the launch of Cowork, a research preview that brings agentic capabilities to the Claude Desktop app on macOS. The feature allows Claude to take on complex tasks that can run for extended periods, continuing to work even when users step away.
Built on the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, Anthropic’s tool for developers is designed for a broader level of professional work. Combining these capabilities into the desktop app, Anthropic is targeting professionals who work with documents, files, research, and data, rather than just code.
What Cowork Is and Who It’s For
Cowork is designed around outcomes rather than prompts. Instead of guiding Claude step by step, users can describe what they want done, such as organising files, creating reports, or summarising research, without having to manage each step.

The feature is currently available only as a research preview for Max plan subscribers using the Claude Desktop app on macOS. According to Anthropic, Cowork is for analysts, researchers, writers, and other knowledge workers handling complex information.
How Does Cowork Actually Work
When a task is started in Cowork, Claude first analyses the request and creates a plan. If the work is complex, it breaks the task into smaller subtasks and coordinates them in parallel when needed. As a result, allowing Claude to handle multi-step work without constant user input.
Unlike standard chat sessions, tasks in Cowork can run for long periods without being interrupted by context limits or timeouts. Users will be able to monitor progress, review Claude’s reasoning, or intervene mid-task to adjust direction. Making Claude feel more like a coworker than a tool.
Running Tasks on Your Own Computer
Cowork runs directly on the user’s computer, executing tasks inside a virtual machine environment. This setup lets Claude safely access local files that the user has approved, while keeping the work isolated from the main operating system.
Once a task is complete, Claude delivers finished outputs directly to the file system. These can include formatted documents, spreadsheets with working formulas, slide decks, and organised folders. Anthropic emphasises transparency and control, allowing users to see what Claude plans to do before it proceeds and to supervise tasks while they are running.
However, since Cowork has internet access and the ability to make real changes to files, Anthropic has flagged it as carrying higher risks than standard chat interactions.
Users are encouraged to review permissions carefully, particularly when working with sensitive material.

Why This Matters for the Future of AI at Work
Cowork highlights a broader shift in how AI is being introduced into professional workflows. Instead of focusing on faster responses or smarter answers, Anthropic is betting on AI that can quietly execute work in the background with minimal supervision.
For now, Cowork’s capacity is limited to macOS, lacks memory of previous sessions, and consumes more resources than chat. But it offers a glimpse of how AI at work may soon evolve, with tools acting more like teammates than assistants.
For Anthropic, Cowork is not about replacing people, but more about changing how work gets done. It suggests the next phase of AI may focus less on conversation and more on getting work done efficiently.
